Systems

Roofing systems, and where each one fits.

The spec names the system. The deck, attachment, insulation, seams and flashing decide how it performs in Dallas.

North Texas

What the weather here asks of a roof.

  • HeatReflective surfaces lower the roof temperature and the cooling load.
  • HailCover board and thicker sheets resist impact from spring storms.
  • WindThe uplift rating in the spec sets the attachment at corners and edges.
  • PondingTapered insulation moves water to the drains before it can sit.

North Texas

Heat, hail, wind and ponding.

  • Heat. Dark surfaces get very hot. White single-ply and reflective coatings lower the roof surface temperature and the cooling load.
  • Hail. Cover board and thicker membranes resist impact. On low-slope roofs, a rated roof means an FM Approved assembly with a hail classification; on shingles and metal, UL 2218 Class 4.
  • Wind. Wind-uplift ratings set the attachment pattern, with tighter fastening at corners and edges. The pattern comes from the spec, not a rule of thumb.
  • Ponding. Water that stays on a roof past 48 hours shortens its life. Tapered insulation and drains are the fix.

Under the membrane

Insulation and cover board.

Polyiso board in one or two staggered layers carries most of the R-value. Tapered insulation and crickets move water to the drains. A cover board between insulation and membrane adds hail and traffic resistance. The spec states the R-value and the energy code sets the minimum. More on insulation and cover board.

Warranty

Warranty terms in every proposal.

Manufacturer warranties cover the material, and sometimes labor, for the term the spec states. A workmanship warranty from the roofing contractor covers the installation. Warranty terms appear in each proposal.
